How we check the number

The check digits are calculated from the rest of the number, so anyone can verify them. On an example number it looks like this:

  1. 1

Take the whole number, with the country letters.

    PL60 1020 1026 0000 0422 7020 1111

  2. 2

Move the first 4 characters to the end.

    1020 1026 0000 0422 7020 1111 PL60

  3. 3

    Replace the letters with numbers: P = 25, L = 21.

    1020 1026 0000 0422 7020 1111 252160

  4. 4

Divide that number by 97 and look at the remainder.

Remainder 1: the number is valid.

What is a Polish bank account number made of?

A Polish account number (NRB) has 26 digits. The first 2 are check digits, the next 8 are the bank's sort code, and the last 16 are the customer's account number. In the IBAN format the letters PL come before the digits.

What is a bank's sort code?

It is the 8 digits NBP assigns to every bank and every branch. The first 4 digits are the bank code: they are usually enough to recognise the bank, for example 1140 is mBank. The full code points to a specific branch.

What is the SWIFT code (BIC) for?

The SWIFT code, also called BIC, is a bank's international identifier. It is given together with the IBAN for transfers from abroad. You will see your bank's code in the result once you enter an account number.

How do I check a foreign bank by account number?

A foreign IBAN starts with two country letters. We check whether the number is correct and show the country. We don't name the bank, because every country keeps its own register.

How do I turn an NRB into an IBAN?

Put the letters PL in front of the number and remove the spaces. The digits stay the same: 26 digits become 28 characters.

Common questions

How do I tell which bank an account number belongs to?

Enter the number in the field above. The bank is given away by the 8 digits right after the check digits: the sort code NBP assigns to every bank and branch.

Can I find out who owns an account from its number?

No. The number shows only the bank and the branch. The bank doesn't share the owner's details with outsiders: they're covered by banking secrecy.

What does "mistake in the number" mean?

The first 2 digits are calculated from the rest. When they don't match, the number has a mistake: a digit is missing, wrong, or two are swapped.

What's the difference between NRB and IBAN?

NRB is the Polish account number: 26 digits. IBAN is the same number with the letters PL in front, 28 characters in total. Transfers from abroad use the IBAN.

Where does the data come from and is it current?

From the register kept by NBP. We fetch the new version every week and show the publication number and date under the table.
